Academic Publishing: Considerations for BIPOC Scholars

This new webinar in the popular CRIS-JHI Book Publishing Series aims to provide publication support to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) scholars and in particular women and non-binary scholars who often experience less access to the sponsorship and institutional knowledge. 

This panel discussion, co-funded by the "Professional Development for BIPOC Faculty" grant (PI Urvashi Chakravarty) awarded by the UTSC Mentorship Initiatives Fund and convened by Urvashi Chakravarty (Associate Professor of English, University of Toronto and 12-month JHI Faculty Fellow; author of Fictions of Consent: Slavery, Servitude, and Free Service in Early Modern England), will bring together Daniel McNeil (Professor and Queen’s National Scholar Chair in Black Studies, Queen’s University and author of Thinking While Black: Translating the Politics and Popular Culture of a Rebel Generation), Karina Vernon (Associate Professor of English, University of Toronto and author of  The Black Prairie Archives: An Anthology) with university press editors Jenny Tan (Associate Editor, Penn Press) and Alejandra Mejía (Assistant Editor, Duke University Press) who will share their insights on navigating academic publishing from the perspective of scholars of colour.  

While this event is focused on academic publishing for BIPOC scholars publishing in the humanities and social sciences, we welcome everyone interested in hearing these perspectives. Researchers from all levels of experience, affiliated researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students are also welcome to attend.

  • To shed light on the unique experiences that scholars of colour often have during the publication process
  • Understanding the book publishing process and timelines – from submission to publication
  • An opportunity to meet 1:1 with the editors after the session to discuss projects
