You're invited to join us on the afternoon of Jan. 28 to celebrate Data Privacy Day! Acting CIO Dr. Donna K. Kidwell will host an online panel with University of British Columbia’s political science professor Wendy Wong, along with other special guests, to explore Wong’s book We, the Data: Human Rights in the Digital Age.
About our speakersDr. Donna K. Kidwell, Acting CIO, U of T
Donna is an accomplished information technology leader with 18 years of experience in large R1 public institutions, including a pivotal role at Arizona State University as Deputy CIO and Chief Information Security and Digital Trust Officer. She is known for driving innovative information security initiatives and fostering a positive organizational culture. Donna's expertise in technology commercialization and her executive sponsorship of the Trusted Learner Network position her to significantly advance U of T's mission.Dr. Wendy H. Wong, Professor of Political Science and Principal's Research Chair at UBC, Okanagan, located on Sylix Okanagan Nation Territory.Wendy is the author of We, the Data: Human Rights in the Digital Age, published by MIT Press, as well as two other award-winning books, Internal Affairs and The Authority Trap (co-authored with Sarah S. Stroup), both published by Cornell University Press. Wong has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters and has been featured in media outlets such as the CBC, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and The Conversation. She has received grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and other granting agencies.Kiren Handa, Executive Director, Institutional Research and Data Governance, U of TKiren is the Executive Director of the Institutional Research and Data Governance office at the University of Toronto. In this role, Kiren is responsible for overseeing the delivery of institutional data and analytics services, while also implementing an institution-wide data governance program. To guide this work, she leads the Institutional Data Strategy to support the University in strategically harnessing data to achieve institutional goals, while incrementally maturing the institution’s data and analytics capabilities. Kiren is dedicated to partnering with the University’s division to define their data and analytics needs to better inform decision-making, while also promoting access and use to institutional data. Prior to joining U of T in 2020, Kiren spent 20 years in the healthcare sector working in hospital, research, public agency, and management consulting roles. Kiren holds an MSc in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business, York University.Ashley Langille, CIPP/C, Information Privacy Analyst, Information Security, U of TAshley Langille serves as the privacy lead,at the University of Toronto, Information Technology Services, Information Security, Information Risk Management team.Withten years of dedication to this role, Ashley has developed a deep understanding of institutional privacy needs. She leverages extensive experience collaborating with educational technology vendors to ensure compliance with privacy legislation and promote responsible data stewardship.As a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C), Ashley’s primary focus is fostering trust and accountability within the University, cultivating a culture of privacy awareness and leading proactive risk management initiatives.
