Horizon Europe Info Session: How to Participate in 2026-27 Calls - Dec. 11, 2025

Description
The Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation is hosting a webinar on Horizon Europe to promote this significant new funding program to U of T faculty interested in applying to the 2026-2027 calls. 

Horizon Europe is the world’s largest research and innovation collaboration program, with a total budget of C$140 billion (2021-2027). The program is structured into three pillars, and Canada has recently become an associated country eligible to apply for Pillar II: “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness”. Canadians can now participate in or create international consortia to apply for Pillar II project calls and receive grants directly from the European Commission. 

This information session will:  
  • Provide an overview of Horizon Europe’s Pillar II funding opportunities and share U of T’s institutional perspective, 
  • Highlight the support offered by the Mission of Canada to the European Union in Brussels and by the Government of Canada through its Horizon Europe National Contact Points (NCPs), 
  • Share faculty expert insights on European-Commission-funded projects challenges and opportunities, and 
  • Explore the 2026-2027 Work Programme, discussing its structure, key components, process, timeline and the U of T support available to researchers. 
A question & answer period will follow. 

Moderator: 
  • Alex Mihailidis, Associate Vice President, International Partnerships at University of Toronto and Professor in the departments of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Biomedical Engineering and a cross appointment in Computer Science, will give an institutional view and also share how to be successful in Horizon Europe drawing from his own successful experience. 
Speakers: 
  • Mark Burger, Counsellor for Science Technology and Innovation (STI) in the Mission of Canada to the European Union, will present on his office in Brussels and the support you offer to Canadians in relation to Horizon Europe. 
  • June Sun, NCP for Clusters 4 and 5 will represent the Horizon Europe Secretariat and will present on the work of the Canadian Horizon Europe Secretariat and the Canadian NCP Network.  
  • Andrew Benjamin Bricker, an alumnus of UofT, who is now in the Department of Literary Studies at the University of Ghent, will provide tips on how to be successful in Horizon Europe drawing from his own successful experience.  
  • Cintia Cristia, Assistant Director International Research, Deborah Buehler, Research Development and Partnerships Officer, and Abigail Vogus, Research Development and Partnerships Officer, International Research, Research Services Office, Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation, University of Toronto, will speak on the 2026-2027 Work Programme and the U of T support available to researchers. 
Learning Outcomes

After this session, attendees will have a better understanding of: 

  • Knowledge and insight about Horizon Europe Pillar II and how to navigate funding opportunities for upcoming 2026-27 call season  
  • Institutional and federal resources for applying to Horizon Europe  
  • Challenges and opportunities for participating in European-Commission-funded projects 
  • Key steps leading from identifying a suitable call to developing a successful proposal, including analyzing the call, building a consortium, negotiating roles, writing proposals, and collaborating with industry
