Making Psychological Science Accessible: Incorporating a Wikipedia Assignment into Psychology courses

The Association for Psychological Science (APS) has partnered with The Wikipedia Education Program to support its mission to deploy the power of Wikipedia to represent psychological science effectively and responsibly. The Wikipedia Education Program aims to support instructors in incorporating high-impact, real world assignments into their courses to improve the quality and reliability of publicly available information related to several disciplines. Specifically, the Wikipedia Assignment involves having students contribute content to Wikipedia articles related to course content. Students gain experience communicating science effectively to a general audience, supporting their contributions with high quality sources, and organizing their contributions to flow logically with the existing article. In this session, I will be discussing my experience with the Wikipedia Assignment after incorporating it in my PSY326 (Social Cognition) course for three semesters. I will discuss the benefits of the assignment that I have observed as well as the weaknesses and difficulties of the assignment.


Commentary and Reading with Others

Robert Gibbs, Professor, Department of the Study of Religion 

While teaching online during lockdown, I discovered that students reading together could transform their learning. My current practice is to use Perusall and have students comment on short but difficult texts the night before class, and then discuss the texts and comments together during class in small groups. The work of commenting becomes a focus of their reading, and they learn about their own reading and writing by sharing other students’ own practices.
