This session features the following two presentations:
Exploring AI in Student Learning and Language Assessments
Presenters:
Sophia Bello, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Department of French
Hang-Sun Kim, Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies, Associate Professor of German, Teaching Stream, Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures
Sun-Young Kim, Senior Faculty Lecturer, Language Program Director, Department of Languages, Literature, and Cultures, McGill University
To explore the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in second language (L2) classrooms, we designed targeted activities to support German and French learners. Students experimented with AI-assisted writing prompts using Copilot and engaged in oral and written conversational simulations. In this session, we will demonstrate how GenAI tools were integrated across diverse courses, highlighting pedagogical strategies. Our shared course survey revealed a range of responses—from enthusiasm and increased confidence to concerns about over-reliance, initial anxiety, and fears of academic integrity. Our presentation aims to offer insights into the benefits and challenges of using GenAI to support L2 learning.E-learning authoring tools in higher education
Presenter: Gözde Mercan, Assistant Professor of Turkish Language and Linguistics, Department of Near & Middle Eastern CivilizationsE-learning tools are commonly used in instructional design in the corporate world. With the upsurge of online teaching since the COVID-19 pandemic, they have also been adopted more frequently in higher education. When aligned with learning objectives, these tools can prove valuable in promoting active learning, interaction, student engagement, and motivation.
This presentation will discuss the use of one such e-learning authoring tool, Articulate Rise with the AI Assistant, in the design and delivery of university courses. The focus will be on its application in a new 400-level in-person course: “Selected Readings in Turkish Literature”, as an example. The course will be offered for the first time in Fall 2025. During the course preparation stage, the tool has been user-friendly and practical for the instructor. It is expected to be visually appealing and easy to use for students as well. On the other hand, there is a learning curve and a financial cost associated with the tool. Some integration issues are also expected. The pros and cons of this tool against more traditional institutional tools such as LMSs (Canvas/Quercus) and PowerPoint will be assessed. For more upcoming CoP sessions, visit our Quercus site.
