Teaching in Arts & Science: Teaching Programming to Beginners in the Age of Generative AI

Generative AI tools have become very common in computer programming with both novice and expert programmers. Programming educators are faced with two major questions: how do we design our courses so students get adequate practice to learn the skills needed to become expert programmers, and has what students need to know changed?

Jennifer Campbell, Professor, Teaching Stream, and Jacqueline Smith, Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, from the Department of Computer Science, will share their ongoing work on adapting introductory programming courses to address the impacts of generative AI. They will describe the shifts in assessment structure and learning goals happening now, as well as what parts of the courses remain unchanged. They will also share the department's future plans for continuing to evolve introductory programming courses alongside the generative AI tools.
